Making Art in Small Spaces
Living in the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area means truly eye watering real estate prices. As a result, like many locals I've learned to make do with less space. Sometimes people are shocked to learn I do not have my own studio, but creativity is something to be applied to daily life as well!
One of my favorite small art space setups is to simply place a small table near a window with good light. I like to put my photography board on top (literally any board will do!) for a bit more roominess. I keep my main art supplies in a pail-style holder from Yamazaki Home (pictured above).
Then, I usually protect my work surface with a bit of tracing paper, or if I'm painting, something more heavy duty like palette paper, cardboard or a combo of layers if necessary. Even something like wax paper from your kitchen can be used!
A small glass jar is an easy item to have for keeping your glue bottle pointed downwards so things will flow easily. Leftover yogurt containers can be washed and re-used to mix paint and acrylic mediums. I also love using them as a container for small amounts of glue.
This type of art setup is easily rearranged, and can be taken down and tucked away. For me the magic is being able to choose almost any location that you find inspiring. Just like how a simple knitting bag allows one to create wonders while sitting on a bus seat, often simple setups can mean creating more art in your life!
